This is the third generation of the popular MT-09 after having undergone the last evolution in 2017. Then the bike changed from the slightly gawky single headlight version, to the more modern and stylish twin headlight model. For 2021, Yamaha has again changed the design of the bike, leaving the current MT design language behind. For the first time in MT-09 history, the 2021 bike bears no resemblance to anything in Yamaha's hyper-naked range. The narrow dual headlights disappear, with the front now dominated by a large center-mounted LED light.Flanking the headlamp are two very thin LED DRLs.The rest of the bike's design is about making the MT-09's mechanics visible to all.Yamaha's designers put the engine, suspension and auxiliary systems in evidence in the cycling part.Overall, it looks like a compact, well-proportioned machine – and it's no accident.Yamaha has repositioned the fuel tank, headlight and exhaust as close as possible to the new 889cc engine.Mass centralization is evident on the 2021 MT-09.To help keep the bike on par with the Euro5 and ahead of the naked bike segment, Yamaha has chosen to bestow the 2021 model with the biggest mechanical update since the model was created in 2014. Gone is the 847cc engine. replaced by a new 889cc unit. The new engine is Euro5 compliant and also makes the 2021 MT-09 the most powerful version ever. The extra capacity comes from increasing the cylinder bore by 3mm giving the unit another 49cc which increases maximum power by 4hp, for a total of 120hp, which is a 5% increase over the current model. The engine's high revs are one thing, but as anyone who's ridden the MT-09 knows, the MT-09's perfectly linear, wide spread of torque is the most fun aspect of this bike.Bearing this in mind, Yamaha has increased the maximum torque which is now reached at 7,000rpm, 1,500rpm lower than before.Completing the changes in the new engine is the revised fuel injection system, with a shift of the injectors close to the cylinder head towards the intake valve, with fuel being injected directly into the back of the intake valves. The system was adopted to improve atomization, improve combustion, increase fuel efficiency and help achieve this important Euro5 certification. The 2021 Yamaha MT-09 gains Kayaba (KYB) forks with 41mm bars with preload, compression and extension damping adjustment. The rear suspension link design has also been changed and the new KYB adjustable rear monoshock is configured to suit the new chassis with its weight not significantly reduced. The 2021 bike also includes an innovative new type of wheel that is heated and then spun on high-pressure rollers. The result is a wheel that Yamaha claims is the lightest ever, and as any bike trainer knows, reducing weight is key to improving acceleration, braking and handling. The new MT-09 will be available in three colors: Storm Fluo, Icon Blue and Tech Black.First deliveries to Yamaha's European dealers will start from March 2021.
